I know that many of you have probably heard some tall fish tales over the years and a lot of these seem loaded with B.S., but my story has nothing to do with the big one that got away and the events that I am about to present to you really did happen. It was in late Nov. 97 when this incident occured. I was fishing alone at a lake that is about 2 hrs north of Toronto hoping to snag some late fall walleyes. I was at my favourite spot that's just beneath a bridge that stands about 14 feet high that runs along a rough country road and because parking is not permitted I was forced to leave my car in a clearing just a few yards off the road ( which meant that anyone driving along would not know that I was fishing). Anyway, I had been fishing for about 3 hrs without a single bite and I was just about to call it quits because it was nearly midnight and the moon had just been hidden by the clouds. I was in the process of packing up my gear when a heard a vehicle stop on the bridge and two men getting out. Initially I thought they were just unloading their tackle because one of the men popped open the trunk. But I was horrified to hear a tremendous splash from something large that these men threw into the lake. However, what was even worse was that one of the men shined his flashlight on this object and realised that it had been snagged on some rocks due to the low water level, so now these men were coming down to where I was. I guess it was just instict because I switched off my off pocket flashlight, snatched up my equipment and dived into some shrubs. The next thing I know, I heard the 2 men grab this object, tossed it out into deeper water and before I knew it, they had burned rubber out of there. I probably waited for about 20 min. when I finally worked up enough courage to come out a see wait it was these men had disposed ( and like me, you are probably thinking that it was the same thing I thought this package was). I turned on my flashlight and I was able to see a large object wrapped in garbage bags floating about 20 yards from shore. Since I was obssessed with finding out what was in this package, I started casting my JitterBug in an attempt to snag it and after about 10 min. hooked it and slowly pulled it in. Whatever it was, it was really heavy. When I finally brought it into shore, I saw that the obect inside was about 36 inches long and it was massive. My first assumption was that these horrible men had dis-membered somebody and discarded into the lake. Well, I eventually worked up enough nerve to tear open the plastic bag but I nearly fainted when I noticed a large amount of blood was streaming out. I was just on the verge of running screaming back to my car when I realised that there was an antler protruding out of the bag. It turned out to be the head of a large buck that this men had killed and since deer season had just ended, they were disposing of any possible evidence of this terrible crime. I eventually contacted both the police and the Provincial Game Authorities and told them what had happened and where the animal remains have been left. Although I was nearly scared into a cardiac-arrest on the night of this incident, I am still a dedicated angler and I still go fishing ( alone and with my buddies ). But I must confess that have purchased a semi-automatic pellet gun and take it with me whenever I go alone. ( well at least it looks like the real thing )
